New Book--Case Studies and Activities In AdEd and HRD Last updated: Thursday - July 22, 2010 It is with great pleasure that we announce another new book in our Adult Education Special Topics: Theory, Research and Practice in LifeLong Learning series: Case Studies and Activities in Adult Education and Human Resource Development.
Dr. Steven W. Schmidt (asst. professor at East Carolina University) has done a fantastic job of casting a vibrant vision of how to use case studies effectively. In addition this is a landmark volume because he foresaw the need for many examples and strategies as model for readers.
I have had the privilege of working with Dr Schmidt as his book editor and was so pleased to see his excitement about the use of case studies, the need for a volume for our field, and then his persistent efforts to craft a book which spoke to a wide variety of contexts with depth.
Case studies have been the method of choice for law and business education. Moreover, as one would expect it is also used in medicine and counseling. However, for some reason our fields have been slower to widely discuss the means of using them, and have a sourcebook of examples.
Exciting? It gets better. Rather than creating several books, Prof. Schmidt recognized the need and combined the volume. Therefore in just one book, readers learn
why and how to use case studies,
how to facilitate and debrief them,
how to facilitate them
what to do in debriefing them, and
how to design their own!
I know this will be a book that many professors and students will use to help them prepare classes and training sessions. In addition, it will be a great resource for faculty development, as an instructional strategies resource, and provided detailed study of case study across adult education and human resource development.
Just in time for the new school year, just how convenient has this gap in the literature been filled! Thank you Dr. Schmidt and IAP!
As with all Information Age Publishing (IAP) books you also have the option of paperback, hardback and e-book formats. We also hear they will be available in Kindle format shortly.

This book is a truly one of a kind human interest, life transformation and professional development research book rolled up into one compelling volume. Here is the formal description:
The Power of Learning from Inquiry Teacher Research as a Professional Development Tool in Multilingual Schools
by Aida A Nevárez-La Torre, TESOL Program, Fordham University
A volume in the series: Adult Education Special Topics: Theory, Research and Practice in LifeLong Learning
Series Editor(s): Kathleen P. King, Fordham University
The power of teacher inquiry is revealed when educators examine their practices and the factors that influence them with the purpose of making necessary changes to improve the learning opportunities of their students, and working conditions in schools. As such, in this book the author proposes that reflection and inquiry done by teachers in multilingual classrooms and schools may assist them to construct effective learning communities. In this book, Dr. Nevárez-La Torre examines different ways to reflect and conduct teacher inquiry in instructional settings where students speak more than one language.
Her exploration focuses on a teacher-oriented question: What happens when! practitioners who work in multilingual schools inquire about their own practice, their students’ learning, and their school’s ability to create a community of learners and thinkers? The main purpose of the book is to delineate a model for conducting classroom inquiry that teachers may follow to pursue important questions about their practice and multilingual students’ learning process.
Some special features of the volume include: a case study of a multilingual teacher inquiry group; description of the steps to follow in designing and implementing inquiry projects; and a bibliography of key resources (i.e., books, websites, and journals) for conducting teacher inquiry as a professional development tool and for learning about linguistically diverse classrooms and schools.
There are eight chapters in this book divided into three sections. Although the sections are thematically connected, the reader may use them independently of each other. The fir! st section introduces the idea for the book, the author as a practitioner-researcher, and the main practical and conceptual issues discussed in the book. In addition, there is a chapter that introduces a model for using teacher inquiry as a tool for professional development. The second section includes the analyses of the trajectory followed by three teachers into using teacher inquiry to grow as professionals in ESL and bilingual classrooms. The third section of the book situates professional development using teacher inquiry within a broader theoretical framework supported by other research done by academicians in various educational fields. It also examines some key implications of this work for the education of in-service and pre-service teachers.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND EDUCATION EXPERTS DISCUSS THE FUTURE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN HIGHER EDUCATION
Experts Underscore the Need for Social Media in the Classroom and Beyond NEW YORK (February 11, 2010) –
Dr. Kathy King, author and series editor for Information Age Publishing, participated in an expert panel hosted by McGraw-Hill Education as part of Social Media Week New York titled, “The Future of Social Media in Higher Education.” Students, academics and social media experts shared their thoughts on how social media is changing the way students learn, instructors teach and institutions adapt to innovation. To view pictures, videos and quotes from the discussion, visit: http://mcgraw-hill.presslift.com/social-media-higher-education.
The following themes, issues and trends were discussed at length, indicating the role of social media today in the higher education classroom and its future potential:
Geo-tagging will be a powerful tool for higher education as it can be used to target locations and get information about those locations, whether students are working on sociology, science, etc. Dr. King talked about specific disciplines who have been utlizing it already and great promise of the application. Adam Ostrow, editor in chief of Mashable.com, cited FourSquare’s partnership with Harvard University as an example.
Co-learning as a model for teachers and students to advance technology integration. In the video clip just below, Dr. King shares how teachers can advance technology practice AND model lifelong learning with a co-learning model. She describes how co-learning can be used to facilitate teachers and students to advance technology integration with many benefits for mutual professional and personal growth.
The Apple iPad will have a significant impact in the education market by giving students the ability to have all their textbooks and notes on one device coupled with social media and collaborative capabilities.
The “smudging” of technologies: Augmented reality, mobile computing and crowdsourcing. Collaboration will turn into a mix between online and offline environments through augmented reality, mobility and the ability to bring in the wisdom of crowdsourcing with physical environments. Vineet Madam of McGraw-Hill Education said, “We need to develop the educational analog of these technologies to deepen engagements among college students.”
Social media can help solve the student engagement crisis. Of the more than 20 million higher education learners, more than half will not earn a degree within 6 years. The reason most cited for this is lack of engagement. Social media has an opportunity to engage students in a manner that not only compatible with the way students already communicate with their peers, but can foster more open, collaborative conversations between students and instructors.
In order for both students and instructors to engage in social media, there needs to be a level of incentive. In terms of student incentives, McGraw-Hill is experimenting with status, reviews and rewards models, similar to those used by Amazon and eBay. GradeGuru.com is leading this charge with its Status Badges for top contributors to its site. Larger institutional and policy issues on this topic were also revealed and explored.
“This panel not only brought together intelligent, innovative minds from across a variety of industries, including education, publishing, marketing, technology and journalism, it also captured the spirit of collaborative learning,” said Dr. Kathleen P. King, a panelist and professor at Fordham University and president of Transformation Education LLC. “Even after the panel discussion was complete our in-depth conversation continued through the very social media channels we prescribed during the discussion for the education community. This panel vividly revealed the engagement that social media can inspire and the manner in which it can be utilized for conferences, education and even professional learning.”
The panelists included:
Adam Ostrow, editor in chief of Mashable.com
Dr. Kathleen P. King, professor at Fordham University and president of Transformation Education LLC
Greg Verdino, VP of strategy and solutions at Powered and author of microMARKETING
Mary Casey, NYU student and founder of Jatched.com
