Legal Workers and Their Children Last updated: Monday - May 5, 2008 The Legal Arizona Workers Act went into effect on January 1, 2008. Business owners with worksites in Arizona can lose their state and local licenses if they knowingly or intentionally hire undocumented workers. The effect of the new law on the public schools in poor urban areas of the state has been immediate. A precipitous drop in enrollments of 2% of the students was experienced in many school districts. Anti-Hispanic feelings run heavy in all parts of the state. A G Rud of Purdue University asks: "Who could possibly police such a law?" Answer: Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who bills himself as the toughest sheriff in America. His hundreds of deputies have been patrolling the streets of Maricopa County now for weeks stopping cars for improper use of turn signals and broken tail lights, and asking for proof of legal presence in the country. If they find none, they arrest. His office is elected; he's up for re-election soon, and he has a great deal of support from the community. ~~~~~~~~ http://www.infoagepub.com/glass-4.html ~~~~~~~~ Send a Message to the Author RSS |
