Shakespeare, Milton and Ayn Rand Last updated: Monday - May 5, 2008 The charitable arm of the BB&T Corporation pledged a $1 Million donation to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte if they would require all students to read Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged," the "best defense of capitalism," according to John Allison, CEO of BB&T, an online banking and insurance company. UNCC agreed to the deal. Marshall Univ in Huntington (WV) and Johnson C. Smith Univ (??) in Charlotte also took the money that had Ayn Rand attached. Ayn Rand's books and philosophy are very appealing--if you are 14--but whether they deserve the attention they will receive at UNCC is beside the point. Money buys curriculum in US universities? Amazing. A G Rud of Purdue remarks: "File this under the corporatization of the university. Paying to have students read a work such as that...really, any work for that matter. What a misstep by both parties." ~~~~~~~~ http://www.infoagepub.com/glass-4.html ~~~~~~~~ Send a Message to the Author RSS |
